Getting your plant identified
Answer as many of these questions as possible! You can copy and paste the list into your post if it helps.
Where in the world did the plant originate from? (e.g. country, region)
Where did this specimen come from? (e.g. garden centre, local nursery, cutting from a friend)
How long have you had this specimen? (e.g. bought a month ago, had it for 10 years)
Did the plant have any names or labels associated when you got it? (even if you think they were wrong!)
What growing conditions has it been in over the last year? (e.g. lighting, watering routines, temperatures, and whether those things have changed over time)
Try to include photos of the following:
- The whole plant,
- The top of the leaves,
- The underside of the leaves,
- The stems,
- Flowers, if there have been any.
Identifying other people's plants
Try to use precise scientific and cultivar names. Vague common names like "wandering dude" can mean very different things to different people. We already know it's probably a Commelinaceae plant!
Don't rely on ID charts or AI apps. They're usually incomplete and often inaccurate.
If you disagree with someone else's ID, explain why. Point out which specific distinguishing features you've observed, and provide evidence or examples for comparison if you can.
